Chromophores for dye-sensitized solar cellselectrodes

The Chromophore (sensitizer) is the species in the DCS that actually performs the work as a “heart”.  “Pumping” electrons from its excited state into the semiconductor.

Ru-based sensitizers are so far giving the best efficiencies (around 11 %). The Center of Molecular Devices are developing both metal based and metal free sensitizers, and great progress have been achieved with the organic sensitizers.

The sensitizer can be devided into three different parts; donor, linker and acceptor. Most chromophores developed by CMD, is based on the triphenyl amine donor, but other donors are under investigation. The linker normal consist of one or more thiophene units and the acceptor is the cyanoacrylic acid.
